About this test

What's tested
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S)

DHEA-S is the sulfated, storage form of DHEA and the primary version found in the bloodstream. Sulfation is a natural process where the body adds a sulfate group to DHEA, increasing its stability and extending its circulation time. Because DHEA levels fluctuate throughout the day, DHEA-S provides a more consistent and accurate measure of long-term adrenal output. Testing DHEA-S offers reliable insight into hormone availability and the body’s ability to manage stress over time.

Note: This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin. Cease biotin supplementation at least 72 hours prior to blood draw.

Why consider this test?

DHEA-S is a critical precursor hormone that plays a central role in supporting the endocrine system. Low levels can disrupt a wide range of body functions, including immune defense, metabolic regulation, cardiovascular integrity, cognitive performance, and reproductive health. Because DHEA also helps buffer the effects of chronic stress, insufficient levels may contribute to fatigue, mood changes, and reduced adaptability. Testing DHEA-S offers clinically valuable insight into hormone reserve, adrenal output, and broader physiologic resilience.

Does Marek Diagnostics accept insurance?

Marek Diagnostics is a cash-pay service. Our platform offers direct access to comprehensive testing without the limitations, denials, or delays imposed by insurance companies. If traditional insurance covered the kind of proactive, high-quality lab work we offer, Marek Diagnostics wouldn’t need to exist.

However, many clients successfully use their HSA/FSA to cover their testing costs. Marek Diagnostics is partnered with TrueMed for convenient deployment of HSA/FSA funds at checkout.

My panel Meets Treatment Requirements — what does that mean?

Do I need to pay a separate fee at the lab to get my blood drawn?

No additional payment is required at the lab. Our expert-built panels include the venipuncture and if you’re building a custom panel or testing biomarkers individually, a $5 venipuncture fee will be automatically added at checkout.
